The United State’s EB-5 Visa Program
The United States’ EB-5 Visa program provides a method for foreigners to become lawful permanent residents of the United States by investing at least $1,000,000 to finance a US business that will employ at least 10 American workers. The problem, however, is that there is little regulation in overseeing the investment to the US business, which sometimes results in the misuse of investor funds and misrepresentations in EB-5 marketing.
According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the EB-5 Visa program has brought $8.7 billion to the United States in foreign capital since 2012. While EB-5 investors are always encouraged to complete their own due diligence before investing, for many it is too late and the investments have been misused to the investor’s detriment.
