Case Details

Do you or a someone you know own or lease a 2018-2019 Ford F150 or a 2019 Ford Ranger?

Owners of 2018-2019 Ford F150s and 2019 Ford Rangers may have been deceived by Ford about the fuel efficiency of their vehicles, which is the subject of an investigation by the Department of Justice.

Ford Motor Co. is under investigation by the DOJ because it reportedly adopted a flawed approach to simulate tire friction and aerodynamic drag, both of which affect fuel economy.

By adopting this flawed approach, the affected Ford vehicles are not as fuel efficient as promised. Ford has submitted a testing plan to government regulators and the first vehicle Ford is testing is the 2019 Ford Ranger.

The 2018-2019 Ford F150 trucks may also be impacted and may not be as fuel efficient as promised.

The onboard trip meters for the Ford trucks covered by this investigation also appear to continually misrepresent the vehicles’ poor mileage.

If you own one of these Ford trucks, this could be costing you money because your vehicle may be experiencing drastically reduced fuel efficiency leading to higher fuel costs.

Overview: 2018-2019 Ford F150 & Ford Ranger Fuel Efficiency

The Justice Department began a criminal investigation into Ford’s emission testing and certification process, the automaker reported in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in late April 2019.

This news came after Ford reported to the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board in February that it was beginning an investigation to determine if the fuel economy of some of its vehicles was misstated due to incorrect computer modeling, CNBC reported.

Ford hired a third-party firm to conduct the investigation. The investigation was supposed to look at specifications that the automaker used to test emissions and fuel efficiency standards in addition to applications used for emissions testing.

The fuel efficiency issue is related to how road-load is estimated. Road-load is the resistance level a vehicle experiences when it is driving at a consistent speed on a smooth surface. It is factored into how fuel efficiency is determined and is unique to each vehicle. It is determined using both analytical modeling and testing on a physical track.

Ford said in its SEC filing that it did not know what the Justice Department investigation would find and that it could not “provide assurance that it will not have a material adverse effect on us.”

The issue is not supposed to be related to the use of a “cheat device” that was at the center of the recent Volkswagen diesel scandal, Ford said.

The 2019 Ford Ranger was the first vehicle to be re-evaluated, which was advertised to have a fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon.

Ford was reportedly alerted to the issue by a “whistleblower” through an internal system known as Speak UP created for Ford employees to report any problems they notice that they think the company should know about.
